Workshops & Presentations

Our Curious bookseller has lived and breathed the world of books for a dozen years. The longer she is in the business the more connections she makes between books & curriculum and books & children’s needs & interests.

Kirsten Cappy of Curious City, with her enthusiasm for and knowledge of the children’s literature, is an excellent choice for presentations and workshops focusing on the trends and applications of children’s books. Workshops can focus around specific subject areas, applications, age levels, or other aspects of children’s literature. The audiences for her presentations have been educators, aspiring children’s book writers and parents.

NEW VOICES:
Finding New Books for the Classroom Amongst the Young Adult & Adult Bestsellers

Every year, the trade book publishers produce well over 1,000 fiction titles aimed at children from grades 5-12. In the adult market, the publishers release a staggering 27,000 new fiction titles each year. Amongst those book releases, there are challenging, well-written and relevant books for grades 5-12 which we will call ‘new voices’. Which ‘new voices’ are children choosing to read? Which of the ‘new voices’ would be relevant for the classroom? Does an educator have the responsibility to use ‘new voices’ in the classroom?

Audience: Middle School and High School English Teachers

Comments on the Seminar:

“Thank you for your highly entertaining, informative, and helpful presentation on young adult books. The English teachers at Pierce Middle School and Milton High School are unanimous in their praise for you and your efforts at our professional development workshop.”
-Barbara Seegraber, English Department Head, Milton H.S.

“Your presentation was one of the best we've ever had, and never before have people in the high school discussed having anyone actually come back to do more. They're still talking about how great it was.”
-John Radosta, English Teacher, Milton H.S.

WHAT’S HOT IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE:
What Stories and Illustrations are Catching the Imaginations of Parents, Educators and Kids

Outside of the media tie-in books like Sponge Bob, Square Pants, marketing is limited in the children’s books. It is still a world in which the story and the artwork determine a book’s success. What’s ‘hot’ in children’s literature and why? As an aspiring or current children’s author, you do not have to write the next Harry Potter or Junie B. Jones but you should know what about the series has captivated children. During the presentation we will review the bestsellers from picture books to chapter books to non-fiction books and examine the themes that have made them so successful.

Audience: Current and Aspiring Children’s Authors & Illustrators

Comments on the Presentation:

“You were delightful and informative-and people really enjoyed the program.”
-Sara Cecil, Executive Director, Maine Writers and Publishers
