900 Children’s Books

Raising Readers Book Selection Committee

Raising Readers Book Selection Committee

For the 10th March in the Curious City Decade, I will stand before a circle of doctors, nurses, home health professionals, early childhood educators, librarians, Kindergarten teachers, parents, and grandparents while they read, review, revel in, and (sometimes) reject close to 100 children’s book titles for ages Birth to Five.

As the Book Consultant for Raising Readers, I have the year long pleasure of prescreening every baby, toddler, and PreK book published to arrive at the 80-100 that the committee will further vet at this annual meeting.

After long deliberation, 12 of those titles will go to be distributed to every child in the state of Maine in the featured age group.  The program, in operation since 2000, has given over 2 million books to Maine children thanks to the greatly generous support of the Libra Foundation.  Astounding, yes?

Of all the projects that Curious City has participated in in the last decade, it is the honor of working alongside the brilliant women at Raising Readers that shines brightest.

Have a look at the books Raising Readers is currently distributing and the books distributed in the last 14 years.
