In honor of Breast Cancer Month, author Charlotte Agell will be giving away a dozen copies of the chapter book The Accidental Adventures of India McAllister.
For every librarian who enters to win, the author will give $1 to Project Pink.*
Why? The character, India’s artist mom is a Breast Cancer Survivor. In fact, on page 24 you will spot an illustration of India’s mom artistic reaction to loosing her breast.
Some people flipping through the book have wondered about this illustration and wondered WHAT it was doing in a book“…rooted in a tradition that goes back to Beverly Cleary’s RAMONA stories.” —Booklist
“So many of my friends and colleagues are Breast Cancer survivors or are currently battling Breast Cancer,” says Charlotte Agell, “The strength required of India’s mom is well known to me through these friends. I hope librarians and teachers will read the pages surrounding the infamous page 24 and come to respect India’s mom’s quirky courage and how her illness plays into her fourth grade daughter’s life.”
You can read more about India’s feelings about her mom’s cancer on her blog.
