Curious City accompanied Phillip Hoose to Harpswell Community TV to record his acknowledgement speech for the YALSA Excellence in NonFiction Award for his book Moonbird: A Year on the Wing with the Great Survivor B95.
Passing sunlit coves and stands of pine, we kept an eye out for the tower that would mark America’s last non-digital community station. A map inside the door was marked with red dots showing their transmission range down the pennisulas and up the rolling hills of Downeast Maine.
Don, Donna, and Donelle invited us into the studio complete with kitchen, park benches, and a table for intimate Charlie Rose-like exchanges. The curtains were drawn against the sun blind snow, the camera was rolled in, and Don gave Phil the sign that we were “rolling.”
In exchange for Phil Hoose appearing on their 30-minute book talk program, Harpswell Community TV recorded Phil’s speech, brilliantly edited it down to the 5-minute YALSA requirement, and sent us out with a DVD to mail off to YALSA headquarters. Now that, my friends, is real community partnership.
Yes, we could have rolled into the videographer studio in Phil’s fine city, but then Downeast Maine would not be soon seeing Moonbird: A Year on the Wing with the Great Survivor B95 featured on their favorite channel. Want to tune in? Get out those bunny ears.
